Mini-golf benefits Rescue Mission

The Rescue Mission of Trenton, the recipient of this year's Times Holiday Appeal, is celebrating its 95th anniversary. Since its founding in 1915, the Mission has provided a warm, safe, clean refuge for those who have fallen on hard times.
The Rescue Mission's annual fundraising event is not a fancy gala or golf tournament held at a country club, but rather a unique indoor miniature golf tournament staged in the corridors and nooks and crannies of the Mission complex.
The 7th Annual Adam Shanks Memorial Mission Miniature Golf Masters Tournament will be held Friday, March 18, 2011, at the Rescue Mission. Tee time will be 11:30 a.m. The barbecue/awards ceremony will follow at 1:30 p.m.
Five years ago, the tournament was renamed in honor of the late Adam Shanks, who served for more than 30 years on the Rescue Mission board of directors, including terms as president and treasurer. Adam was an avid golfer. His wife, Ruth Shanks, attended last year's tournament, which was a huge success with more than 125 guests.
The upcoming event will again feature two courses designed by the Mission's staff and residents, a silent auction, a wide assortment of trophies and a "summertime" barbecue with all the trimmings. And, of course, lots of good-natured golf ribbing.
"What makes the event so special is that it is a product of the combined talent, commitment and support of the Mission staff, volunteers and supporters," said Mary Gay Abbott-Young, the Mission's CEO.
To participate in the event or donate an item to the silent auction, or to be a corporate sponsor, call the Rescue Mission of Trenton at (609) 695-1436 ext. 102 or go to www.rescuemissionoftrenton.org for more information.
Funds from this year's Holiday Appeal will be used to support the Rescue Mission's broad range of programs for the homeless, the hungry, the transient and the addicted.
Hutchinson Industries, a longtime supporter of the Rescue Mission of Trenton, has pledged to match the first $25,000 raised from contributors, challenging the community to be generous this holiday season.
