Rescue Mission serves -- efficientlyThursday, November 25, 2010 SPECIAL TO THE TIMES
The Rescue Mission of Trenton works hard to create an environment where its clients can live with dignity, build self-esteem, and experience love, responsibility and hope. Its programs are designed to meet the community's needs while helping individual clients reclaim and rebuild their lives.
In addition to operating the only licensed emergency shelter in Mercer County, the Mission runs a soup kitchen that serves nutritious meals to those who are hungry on weekends, a time when the service is not available elsewhere in Trenton. It also provides free clothing and furniture to homeless clients and individuals referred to the Mission by other social service agencies such as United Progress Inc. and Mercer Street Friends.
The Mission's service report for the past fiscal year provides tangible evidence of the wide range of services that it is able to deliver in a financially prudent manner: 54,926 bed nights in the emergency shelter; 119,402 meals serviced in the emergency shelter; 19,914 bed days in the residential addiction treatment program; 2,906 bed days in rooming and board house (Robinson Place); 1,706 bed days in transitional housing; and 3,105 distributions of clothing and furniture free of charge.
For the sixth straight year, the Rescue Mission of Trenton has earned a coveted 4-Star Efficiency rating from Charity Navigator, the "Online Guide to Intelligent Giving." Forbes, Business Week and Kiplinger's Financial Magazine, among others, have profiled and celebrated Charity Navigator's unique method of applying data-driven analysis to the charitable sector.
Funds from this year's Holiday Appeal will be used to support the Rescue Mission's broad range of programs for the homeless, the hungry, the transient and the addicted.
Hutchinson Industries has pledged to match the first $25,000 raised from contributors, challenging the community to be generous this holiday season.
