New building to house the homeless
The Rescue Mission of Trenton, the recipient of this year's Times Holiday Appeal, recently was awarded a $400,000 competitive grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to create 15 studio apartments for the homeless at the site of a long-vacant building located at 501-505 Perry Street across from The Times.
The project site is adjacent to the on- and off-ramps for the Perry Street exit to Route 1 and is located at one of the key entryways to the city of Trenton.
The existing building will be demolished and a new four-story, 15,700-square-foot building will be constructed. The grant was awarded under HUD's Continuum of Care programs. The building was acquired a few years ago with the help of Hutchinson Industries.
The lot adjacent to the building was conveyed to the Mission by Princeton Holdings for $1 in 2003. The total cost of the project will be approximately $3 million.
Each of the apartments will be approximately 500 square feet and ADA compliant. The first floor will be 4,527 square feet and include a manager's office, laundry room, rest room, community room and commercial space. The remaining three floors will each have five studio apartments and a small sitting area.
This project is the next step in the mission's attempt to provide a wide continuum of housing options for its clients.
Funds from this year's Holiday Appeal will be used to support the Rescue Mission's broad range of programs for the homeless, the hungry, the transient and the addicted.
Hutchinson Industries, a longtime supporter of the Rescue Mission of Trenton, has pledged to match the first $25,000 raised from contributors, challenging the community to be generous this holiday season.
