Socially Responsible Recycling Program
The Mission’s solution to sustainability and job training
What began in the 1930’s as a way to engage the men in the nightly shelter has evolved into a multi-faceted entrepreneurial program that provides job training for residents at the Mission. The Socially Responsible Recycling Program (SRR) is a unique way to recycle material donations and provide residents with onsite job training and development at the Mission.
Through the efforts of its residents, the Mission is able to maintain daily operations for a number of human and social service programs – including emergency shelter, residential treatment, housing, and a thrift store. Since its early beginnings, the Mission has been dedicated to recycling efforts in the community. The Mission accepts new and gently used clothing, furniture, and housewares. Operations now reach 9 counties in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Rather than ending up in a landfill – material donations provide the Mission with reusable material and job opportunities for residents. Residents call local churches, businesses, and groups to host collection drives for the benefit of the Mission.
Residents receive donations at the Mission’s dock and warehouse facility, sort, and prepare them for resale or distribution.
Donations are distributed free of charge to clients in the emergency shelter or in the residential unit. They are also resold in the Mission Thrift Store – one of the largest and most affordable retail outlets in the City of Trenton. Unusable materials are sold in bulk to continue the social service programs at the Mission.The Mission accepts new and gently used clothing, shoes, furniture and housewares. Here are our guidelines:
- Clothing and shoes should be gently used and in usable condition
- Donations should be bagged
- Clothing of any and all types is accepted, regardless of gender, size, or season – the need is continuous!
Shoes and Accessories
- Shoes should be matched and in usable condition
- All clothing accessories are accepted (hats, belts, handbags and purses, etc) and should be in usable condition
- Furniture that is in good, usable condition and free of any damage, including:
- Sofas and loveseats
- Kitchen tables and chairs
- Bedroom sets
- Living room sets
- Unusually large furniture, such as wall units or large sectional sofas, are not accepted
Appliances , electronics, outdoor and garden items
- Must be less than 10 years old and in good, working condition, including:
- Stereo systems
- DVD players
WITHOUT EXCEPTION, we do not accept the following:
- Mattresses or box springs, new or used
- China cabinets, hutches, wall units, or entertainment centers
- Sofa beds, sleeper sofas
- Appliances and electronics over 10 years old
- Building materials of any kind
- Computers – parts or whole
- Tube televisions
The Mission is grateful for the support of the community but in keeping with our socially responsible recycling mission, we must exercise discretion when accepting material donations.
All donations are subject to inspection by staff members of the Mission and all material items are accepted and reviewed at the discretion of Mission staff members. Our drivers have final discretion of all material donations.
